Just for Children.
The Boys and Girls Book About Divorce by Richard A. Gardner, Bantam Books, New York, 1970.
Although published in 1970, Dr. Gardner's book still addresses universal issues faced by children of divorce. Written specifically for children, this book helps young ones deal with feelings and situations that affect them during and shortly after the divorce. Many of Dr. Gardner's positions are still advocated today, although some have become more controversialsuch as his notion that one be honest with children about negative feelings toward the other parent.
The Kids' Book of Divorce: By, For & About Kids by The Unit at the Fayerweather Street School with Eric Rofes as editor, Vintage Books, New York, 1981.
This book is the result of two years' work by 20 school children between the ages of 11 and 14 in an open school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They offer advice on everything from how to avoid taking sides to how to deal with parents' new relationships, stepparents, and gay parents. They describe the legal process of divorce in language a child can understand and cover such subjects as handling a new living situation, holidays, visiting arrangements, and how to get support from friends, relatives, or counselors. Although published in 1981, this book is still interesting and relevant.
