Hire a competent attorney you feel comfortable with, like, and trust.
Make sure that you can afford the attorney's fees, or are able to work out an arrangement for payment.
Never pay a retainer fee that will not be refunded if it is not used up.
It's more important that your attorney can work with your spouse's attorney than it is for your attorney to be able to impress your spouse.
Know whether an associate will be working on your case and determine the associate's billing rate. Find out whether you'll be billed for both the associate's time and the primary attorney's time when both are working on the case.
