Tip 259: Make a graceful exit. |

When you're ready to end a conversation, wait until after you've just finished talking, not immediately after the other person has introduced a new topic or pauses midcourse. Use a closing comment such as "Excuse me. It's been nice to talk with you." "Well, so much for my views on X. I think I'll get something else to drink." ''Excuse me. I want to catch Bob before he leaves." "Excuse me for monopolizing your time. I'll let you visit with someone else now." |

Tip 260: Recognize the importance of small talk. |

If you're on the other end of the conversation when someone initiates small talk, recognize its value to them, if not to you personally. Conversation isn't simply for passing on useful information or getting a job done. More and more in our high-tech, impersonal workplace, people want emotional involvement and connection with others. Talkingabout anythinghelps establish, maintain, and adjust relationships to keep them in good order. |
