When Jerry met Celia in high school, his family was in disarray. His parents were in the midst of divorce and, caught up in their own problems, had little time for him. Perhaps that was just as well. His dad, a martinet and a perfectionist, had constantly corrected his dress, speech patterns, and taste in everything from TV shows to friends. His mother, a perpetual adolescent, was most interested in Jerry when she could flirt with his friends. As far as Jerry was concerned, Celia's supportive family, with their penchant for political discussion and picnics, had saved his life. He was thrilled to take Celia's younger brother under his wing and teach him baseball. He was flattered when Celia's mother asked him for help with packages, or when her Dad invited him to play tennis at the club.
When he married Celia, it's fair to say, he was at least as involved with her family as he was with her.
